Like other long distance running disciplines such as “cross country”, Road Running is a sport unto itself and has its own USATF Association and National Championships at numerous distances. USA Track & Field has established criteria for measuring and certifying road race courses to assure their accuracy and will not issue a USATF sanction to races that do not have a USATF-certified course. The most common road race distances are 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). However, 8 kilometer, 10 mile, half-marathon (13.1 miles), 20 kilometer (12.4 mile), and marathon races (26.2 miles) are also widely held and contest championships at both the local and national level.
