In accordance with the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic movement testing, all athletes who participate in USATF National Championships and Team USA competitions are subject to drug testing performed by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

A number of Southern California Association’s clubs and masters athletes traveled to Ames, Iowa from July 22, through July 25, 2021 to participate and excel in the 2021 USATF Masters Outdoor Championships. Competing in the Cyclone Sports Complex for the duration of the competition, many of our athletes came out on top with big finishes and big wins.

Southern California Association’s very own, So Cal Track Club, led by SCA President and club coach, Mark Cleary, took home big prizes with first place finishes in the Men’s Team Championship and Women’s Team Championship, in the first year that these separate championships were held. Most significantly, though, was the big win for team So Cal Track Club with the combined, overall first place team championship, with a whopping 666 points. This win marked an overall Masters Outdoor Championships sweep for So Cal Track Club and the 20th National Team Title in its history. Adding to these accomplishments were 37 individual event titles and 6 relays for So Cal Track Club. Breaking the American Record of 5:28:50 for M75 in the 800M was Gary Patton, of So Cal Track Club, with a time of 5:19:87

Not to be forgotten and coming in an impressive fifth place, out of the total 111 teams, was Southern California Association club, SC Striders Track Club with 217 points. Completing the top 5 overall teams in the Championship were second place’s Potomac Valley TC with 433 points, Atlanta Track in third place with 317 points, and the Philadelphia Masters in fourth place, with 244 points.

When asked what propelled his club to this year’s success, So Cal Track Club coach Mark Cleary said, “So Cal Track Club’s long time staff massage therapist, Bill Theriault, was key in our success.”

Rounding out the Southern California Association’s clubs’ history making wins were the additions of its prominent members to the USATF Masters Track & Field Hall of Fame. Athletes Gunnar Linde, age 93, and Willie Gault, age 61, of So Cal Track Club, were inducted into the Hall of Fame Class of 2019. SC Striders’ Linda Cohn was inducted into the Hall of Fame Class of 2020. Mark Cleary, SCA President and Masters Hall of Fame Chairman for 2019 & 2020 had the pleasure of presenting those awards at the championship.

The registration for the 2021 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships has been unlocked and registration is available for all events.

Please be reminded that an official seed time/mark linked to the athletic.net profile that was used for the registration must be included in the registration process. Any entry that does not include an officials seed time as noted herein will not be accepted.

Overrides will also not be accepted.

All properly entered athletes before the July 16, 2021 deadline will be allowed to compete in the 2021 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships.

The USATF So Cal Road Running Grand Prix provides a total of $1,650 in cash awards and championship medals to the top 5 overall men’s and women’s scorers. Gold, silver, and bronze USATF medals will also be awarded to the top 3 scorers in 11 men’s and women’s individual 5-year age groups. Championship plaques will be awarded to the top 10 scoring clubs. Prize money is not awarded to youth competitors.

2021 USATF So Cal Road Running Grand Prix Event Schedule

NOTE: The USATF Southern California Association Road Running Grand Prix Series has been abbreviated due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the fluidity of race postponements and cancellations, the number of Grand Prix races may change after the schedule is posted. Therefore, rather than setting a specific number of “best” races to be counted for each individual’s year-end score, the final scores will be based on 50% of the Grand Prix races which were actually held. As such, prize money amounts have been adjusted to reflect the abbreviated season.

Due to the extenuating circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the country, Rule 306 Junior Olympics Program (found in 2021 USATF Competition Rules) cannot be followed in its entirety. Therefore, the Youth Division, with support, and cooperation from the Association Executive Committee and endorsement of the National Office, has decided that for the competition year 2021, local Association and Regional Championship meets will not serve to qualify youth athletes into the National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships on July 26 – August 01, 2021 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Although there will be no advancement requirements (Association or Region), in an effort to preserve the integrity of the JOTF National Championship suggested “Guidelines of Participation” for direct entry into the 2021 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships will be provided shortly. These guidelines will be posted on-line (www.usatf.org) and on athletic.net (registration site). Athletes and coaches are encouraged to review these suggested “Guidelines for Participation” when considering entry into this National Championship.

*WAIVER* USATF Youth Division waiver for athletes to enter the Junior Olympics who may not have produced a time or mark good enough to enter the meet like other Associations in the country. The deadline to submit this form is the same as the registration deadline to enter the meet. Decisions on which waivers will be approved will happen within a couple of days after the deadline.

The USATF Youth Division is pleased to announce that the 2021 USATF Youth Outdoor National Championships schedule has been posted on the USATF website and is now available for registration!

Please be advised that the 2021 schedule has been changed to June 23-26, 2021. Due to COVID-19 protocols and facility logistics there will be no contesting of the Combined (Multi) Events in this championship event.

On Sunday, February 28, 2021 many of our Southern California Association Athletes, Officials &
Board Members traveled down to Santee, CA to support and compete in the 2021 USATF Men’s 50km &Women’s 35km Race Walk Championships. The event, held in Santee, CA for the last few years, saw athletes from all over the country, and several from other countries, compete in one of the first Championships conducted under the safety regulations and restrictions put in place due to Covid-19.
