PITTSBURGH – The USA Track & Field Foundation is currently accepting Youth Grant applications from interested clubs and organizations for its 2021 Youth Grant awards, announced USATF Foundation Executive Director Tom Jackovic.
Youth track clubs and programs from all areas of the United States are encouraged to apply. The Foundation favors the use of grant money to expand existing youth programs/clubs, to provide additional competitive opportunities for children and to enhance the experience for all participants. Preference is given to clubs that are based in low-income areas. It also favors programs that have a history of solid financial management, multiple funding sources and community support. Allowable expenses include equipment, uniforms, meet fees, travel, facility rental, and outreach.
Interested parties may fill out the USATF Foundation grant application online at:
https://usatffoundation.org/grant-info/applications/youth-club-grant-application/
The grant application deadline is January 31th, 2021. Grants will be awarded in February. Grantees will be contacted directly if they should be selected. Each individual organization is eligible for one grant per calendar year. The USATF Foundation has awarded over $1,000,000 in Youth Club Grants since 2006.

Twilight’s Last Gleaming Cross Country Challenge
As should be obvious by now, the 2020 Southern California Cross Country Grand Prix has not materialized. All the races normally contested in the series have been cancelled in some form. Except one:
The Twilight’s Last Gleaming Cross Country Challenge will be held this year. Because it is so difficult to organize an event in the current COVID-19 environment, this race will also serve as the Southern California Association Cross Country Championships. The date is Saturday, October 24 at Arroyo Verde Park, Ventura.
How are we able to hold this one race when everything else is cancelled? We will adhere to local regulations and conduct this race in a socially distanced fashion by running it as a time trial. All on the same day, everybody runs the same course. Places will be determined by time. There will be no group gathering before or after the race. Because this is going to take much longer, we are offering a morning and and an afternoon session to avoid the heat of the day.
For a race that proclaims its distain for advance registration in normal years, pre-registration will be required. In these times we all have to adjust. We will seed the sessions fast to slow, so by telling us your honest 5K time, it will keep you from getting too close to your adjacent competitors and everyone can run in relative safety. You will be assigned a specific minute to be at the start line available on the website the night before the race.
The course is the same monstrosity that has been used for 35 years. Four miles on a variety of surfaces that include steep hills named Skyline, The Finger and The Wall. Many people come back year after year, others say “never again.” The course record holder used one word to describe it: “Torture.” Not exactly a marathon but you’ll feel like you accomplished something. Everybody gets a special commemorative tile award, pick it up at the finish line.
This being the Southern California Association Championships, we will have SCA-USATF Championship medals for the top 10 individuals in the Open division, 40-49 and 50-59 divisions. 5 deep in 60-69 and 70+ divisions. Team plaques to the top 3 teams in each division. USATF membership mandatory for the championships and if you’re a member you get a $5 discount off your entry fee. More details will continue to be updated at http://trackinfo.org/twilight.html

INDIANAPOLIS — USATF’s 42nd Annual meeting will be held virtually, USATF announced today. The annual meeting of the sports administrators, coaches, volunteers and athletes is set for December 3-6. Additional details will be forthcoming.
“It became clear to us that a virtual version of the USATF Annual meeting had to be made a reality,” said USATF CEO Max Siegel. “Taking the safety and well-being of our constituents into account, as well as the guidance of our COVID-19 working group, this is the best option to serve our members.”
A full schedule and further details for the 2020 meeting will be available soon.

The following is a suggested protocol from the National Office to address USATF Association Annual Meetings due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Consider delaying elections until your annual meeting in 2021. If you have an officer or committee chair who decides not to continue, your by-laws and/or committee operation procedures should detail how to fill resignations. The SCA Board supports the following emergency resolution language to remedy the current situation:
Re: 2020 Annual Meeting Elections
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SCA USATF Board of Directors voted to support the following Emergency Resolution:
WHEREAS, due to state and local mandates and emergency circumstances precipitated by the Covid-19 pandemic, SCA USATF will be unable to conduct its elections at its 2020 Annual Meeting as prescribed by its bylaws. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the membership hereby extends the terms of all officers, board members, and other elected positions up for election at the 2020 Annual Meeting to the 2021 Annual Meeting, at which time elections shall take place for these positions. The terms of all persons elected in 2021 under this resolution shall be calculated as if they commenced at the 2020 Annual Meeting.
All SCA members 18 years and older should have received an email to vote on this resolution. We are hopeful and looking forward to hosting competitions in the near future. We value our members and look forward to serving you.
