Ten Athletes Represent USATF So Cal in Rio

July 15, 2016 by webmaster

The end of the Olympic Trials on Sunday, July 10th marked the beginning for Gil Roberts, Boris Berian, Conor McCullough, Allyson Felix, Arianna Washington, Brenda Martinez, Brianna Rollins, Dalilah Muhammad, Whitney Ashley, and Barbara Nwaba, who now embark on their Olympic experience in Rio De Janeiro.

Halfway through the trials, USATF So Cal athletes Felix, Ashley, Roberts, and Berian earned spots on Team USA. Highlights of the second half of the trials were Muhammad, Rollins, Martinez, McCullough, and Nwaba all earning top 3 finishes to punch their tickets to Rio.

Muhammad and Rollins both finished 1st in the 400m hurdles and 100m hurdles, respectively, as well as Nwaba, from the Santa Barbara Track Club who took 1st place in the women’s heptathlon. Martinez grabbed her spot to Rio with a spectacular dive at the finish line to clinch 3rd in the women’s 1500m. On the men’s side, hammer thrower McCullough finished in 3rd place and although he has not met the Olympic qualifying standard, has been invited to participate in the Games by the IAAF to fill the field. USATF relay pools were announced and included So Cal sprinter Arianna Washington on the women’s 4x100m and superstar Allyson Felix on the women’s 4x400m relay.

Other notable men’s performances from the second half of the Trials included Jason Harrell 4th place in the discus and Colin Dunbar’s 7th place hammer finish. The men’s 110m hurdles included good performances from both Aleec Harris and Ryan Wilson who finished in 7th and 9th, respectively. Vista Murrieta High School graduate Michael Norman Jr, finished an impressive 5th in the men’s 200m.

On the women’s side, So Cal athletes performed well both on the track and in the field. The women’s 200m featured 3 SCA females in the final, with a 4th place finish by Felix, a 5th place finish from Washington, and an 8th place finish by Jeneba Tarmoh. In the 100m hurdles, Dawn Harper finished 9th, just missing advancing to the final. Kori Carter finished 4th and Jaide Stepter finished 7th in the 400m hurdles. The women’s heptathlon featured 4 top 10 finishers from Southern California, including Sharon Day-Monroe in 4th, and Santa Barbara Track Club teammates Lindsay Schwartz, 9th, and Lindsay

The Alvord Unified School District middle schools met on Friday, May 13th for their 1st annual district track meet at Norte Vista High School. Each of the four middle schools (Arizona, Loma Vista, Villegas, and Wells) selected 72 student athletes to compete in six different events, including the 100 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 1600 meter run, 4×100 meter relay, softball throw, and standing long jump.

Former Riverside track and field star, Reggie Wyatt Jr., as well as his father, Reggie Wyatt Sr., received funding from USATF’s national office as a part of the USATF Future Stars grant program to help make the meet happen. Through the grant program, officials were hired and medals and a team trophy were distributed to the students.

The Alvord Unified Child Nutrition Services team were a big help in providing buses for each school, as well as a healthy and free lunch for all participating students. The district has plans to continue this meet annually and incorporate a track and field program into their PE curriculum, prior to each year’s track meet.

With this inception year having close to 300 student athletes participating, the event was considered a big success.

The meet was a part of USATF So Cal outreach program to get more people involved and engaged with USATF. For more information about how to get involved with USATF So Cal, please contact Madeline LeDuc, Program Manager: [email protected]

Newport-Mesa Spirit Run – New Elite Mile

March 8, 2016 by webmaster

NM Spirit Run

Attention USATF So Cal Club Leaders!

The next USATF So Cal Grand Prix event is Newport-Mesa Spirit Run on Sunday, March 20th at Fashion Island. Spirit Run offers adult and youth races, including for adults the 5k, 10k, and the NEW Elite or Open Mile, and for children the Youth 5k and 5 separate mile races for ages 4-11. All three distances (mile, 5k, and 10k) are eligible for Grand Prix point scoring.

Spirit Run offers you the opportunity to compete in two races including the 15k (Adult 5k plus 10k, times combined and ranked), the Adult Combo (Adult 5k or 10k plus mile), and the Youth Combo (Youth 5k plus mile). Combo and 15k competitors are eligible to win medals and prizes in both races, and 15k competitors and are eligible to win a third prize for the 15k. If GP competitors run more than one race, only one race will be scored for them and their club.

Spirit Run re-certified its courses this year and they are faster than ever. All courses end on a decline. Also, the out and back on Anacapa before the finish line in last year’s course has been eliminated. I drove the NEW Elite Mile course and it will be very fast! Age-graded GP scores should do very well in that race.

There are special discounts offered to USATF members. More Info (PDF)
